While there are many sought-after fish in the oceans and seas, there is something about fishing in freshwater that is more appealing and comfortable. It may be the fact that man shares the need for this vital source of life, freshwater. Or maybe, it is that freshwaters has a more intimate link with the land. Whatever the case, freshwater fishing has a tremendous draw and appeal. Often, freshwater fishing is where many people get their start. It is a common and attractive site to see a father teaching his child to fish beside a lake or river. With fond memories many people can probably still picture a similar setting. Freshwater fishing has long been a popular pastime. Easy access to rivers and lakes is one reason. Another factor is, a person does not have to have a lot of expensive gear to be able to enjoy this kind of fishing. Yes, rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes, offer many areas where the common man can toss or cast a line into the water in the hopes of catching the ever elusive fish.

Depending on the species and these factors, the fish can be located in very different areas. These considerations will definitely affect a fisherman’s choice of freshwater fishing lures. Further, with so many lures to choose from, a fisherman is wise to do his research on which lures work best under these various conditions.

Each fish has its own specific habits, forage, and characteristics. By taking the time to learn these fish characteristics as well as the challenges that are specific to freshwater fishing, a fisherman will increase his ability to catch more and larger fish.
