Shark Fishing Tips and Tricks

Shark fishing is one of the most popular types of ocean sport in the world today. Depending on where an individual lives or chooses to fish for these massive eating machines they can haul in any number of different varieties. There are a few tips that many would-be shark fisherman might consider to help them when fishing for their prize haul.

The first tip is to study the type of shark that lives in the area they will be fishing. In America, for instance, blue sharks are numerous all across the seaboard in both oceans. Blue sharks are known to be one of the easiest of all shark species to catch when young. They simply do not seem to care what type of hooks are sticking out of a fisherman's bait. They will attack anything that seems like food. This is not really due to stupidity on the part of these sharks, or any shark for that matter. The only way one of these great hunters of the waves can know if something is edible is to take a bite out of it. This has lead to sharks that have been found with anything from tires to license plates in their bellies when caught and cleaned for eating. Blue sharks have been known to be caught multiple times in one day during the same fishing expedition if they are out on the waves for sport and not to catch dinner.

There are several other popular types of shark to catch in American waters as well. Long Island is considered one of the best locations in the world for consistently catching sharks. The Gulf of Mexico is known to be a favored haunt of the bull shark. The bull shark is a somewhat underrated fishing experience since there aren't as many anglers that are aware of just how much of a fight these creatures put up when being caught.

Shark fishing is known to be a deep sea fishing activity if the fisherman desires to catch a true sea monster. Fishing for them from a long ocean pier is problematic at best due to restrictions in most areas. Chumming the water is the best method for drawing in sharks to catch and this means that pier-fishing is not really a viable method due to the fact that it would bring sharks closer to land and swimmers at the beach.

Fishing for sharks is usually best done in the summer months in the northern hemisphere. Generally between June and September depending on the species. Reels in the 6/0 and 12/0 range combined with 50 to 80 pound test category for line are highly recommended. Chumming the water with fresh chopped bait is preferable. The best method is to use a chum-bucket with a screen bottom or holes in the side. This allows the bait to be shaken out slowly into the water every few minutes and allows it to last longer.
