Perch Fishing

Perch is one of the most delicious fresh water fish that are available to catch and also a lot of fun to fish for. For the perfect family outing take the family perch fishing as they are relatively easy to catch and there is no expensive gear required.

Fishing for perch can be done off the shore with much success. If you have a boat you can scour the lake a bit more for schools of perch and fish are typically caught in 6 to 15 feet of water in summer months. Depending on the time of year that depth can be deeper or more shallow. In the spring or winter months perch prefer to go to the deeper water that is a bit warmer.

You can go perch fishing in streams, larger creeks, lakes as well as larger ponds that have a natural water flow. Choose an area that is not heavily weeded and right between lily pads is a great place to fish for perch. Some catch perch in deeper waters out in the open part of a lake but in deeper waters. Most fishermen prefer to stay nearer to the shore for best results.

Equipment for perch fishing is very minimal. A simple rod and reel comination with a medium duty weight line and your choice of hook and bait. Small 1/2" bobbers are the favorite choice of anglers so you can see the fish bite as well as keep the same depth on your hook. Once you see the depth which you caught your fish be sure to set that depth on your line with your bobber.

The bait can be a half a night crawler, live minnow or a large grub and you can use colorful attractor hooks for even better visibility for the fish. Once they see the colorful jig they will come in for closer view and then detect your tasty bait. Having a small variety of hooks and colors gives you a little more opportunity to try different ways of fishing. Perch are schooling fish so once you catch your first fish you are likely to catch more in that same area if you put your line back in quickly. This can be great for fishing with kids who are at most times very impatient. Many children find their love of fishing from their first time fishing for perch.
